Text on a dark teal background: "Just one simple rule – no spoilers!" – Paulo, Amber Meadow.

In October 2024, Amber Meadow’s Hospitality Manager, Paulo Oliveira, was preparing for Novels & Nosh, a community social event designed to encourage residents to try new books and share recommendations. While planning, he found himself in the community’s library.

He’d often heard residents talk about their love of literature, so he was surprised to learn that few of them actually borrowed books. Many explained that vision impairments made it difficult to read the books they had on hand. Realizing the need for more accessible options, Paulo wanted to find a way for avid readers to discover and enjoy new books. “That’s when I thought, ‘Why don’t we start a book club?’”

Turning the page in a new favorite

Determined to make reading accessible, Paulo reached out to the Winnipeg Centennial Library. He met with librarians to brainstorm ideas and arranged access to audiobooks, along with transcripts he could display in large font on a television. He even secured a library card for the entire community so any resident could borrow books.

Paulo brought his idea to some of the community’s most enthusiastic readers, and together they started a weekly gathering. After just a couple sessions, interest spread. “It was like a spark went off.”

From a small group to a thriving reading community

What started as a small group of seven residents has now grown to more than twenty. The book club meets at least three times a week, kicking off each session with coffee, tea and doughnuts. Conversation flows easily, but when the reading begins, everyone is at attention.

Residents with vision impairments listen to audiobooks, those with hearing difficulties read along on the TV and those who prefer traditional books can check them out at any time. “Everyone is encouraged to enjoy each book at their own pace,” Paulo says, “with one rule – no spoilers!”

A book club truly by and for residents

Paulo is proud of what the club has become, but he’s clear about who’s in charge. “This is their club.” Residents lead discussions on which author or genre to explore next, and many have learned how to set up the TV and play audiobooks for the group. “I make sure everything we do is driven by them.”

Expanding the library – and the love of reading

Looking ahead, Paulo plans to expand the community’s library by donating its current collection to a local children’s hospital and working with Winnipeg’s library to rotate new books every couple of months.

From his first day at Amber Meadow, he knew how much residents loved literature. Now, he’s making sure they can enjoy it in whatever way works best for them.
